2016 Fiat 500’s inside sneaks out

Fiat’s updated city car, the compact 500, has been spied once more this week, just hours before its July 4 unveiling.

Earlier snaps of lightly camouflaged prototypes confirmed that we can expect a handful of small exterior tweaks to the 2016 500, but its interior had, until now, been more heavily disguised.

This latest shot, published on Facebook page Ferd, offers a revealing look atthe hatch’s dash, including the anticipated infotainment upgrade.

As with the larger and newer 500X compact SUV, the eight year-old 500 hatch now boasts a large integrated dash display, replacing the earlier monochrome screen and optional TomTom unit.

The new screen, which is likely powered by Fiat Chrysler’s Uconnect infotainment platform, will join the seven-inch digital display that replaced the 500’s conventional instrument cluster last year.

Changes elsewhere in the cabin appear limited to a redesigned steering wheel, along with lightly updated outboard air-conditioning vents and repositioned centre vents, the latter now flanking the main display.

Still, with an all-new model expected to debut in 2017 or early 2018, a dramatic makeover for the current model was never on the cards.

Watch for the refreshed 500 to debut on July 4 in Europe (early July 5, for us here in Australia), marking the anniversary of the original model’s 1957 unveiling.

Expect an Australian debut to occur either late in 2015 or in the first quarter of 2016.
