Lexus IS200t launched with 2.0-litre turbo petrol engine – UPDATE

The Lexus IS200t will become the third model confirmed with the Japanese company's 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine.

Following in the treadmarks of the Lexus NX200t and the forthcoming Lexus RX200t, the new IS200t utilises a marginally uprated version of the same four-pot turbo engine producing 180kW of power at 5800rpm (5kW more grunt than it does in the NX) but the same amount of torque (350Nm from 1650-4400rpm). Lexus claims the engine can propel the IS200t from 0-100km/h in 7.0 seconds.

Those power outputs put the Lexus engine on par with the BMW 328i, and Lexus claims the powerplant offers "superior smoothness and responsiveness, with no turbo-lag and high fuel efficiency".

On that topic, Lexus is claiming consumption of 7.0 litres per 100 kilometres for most models, or 7.2L/100km for models riding on 18-inch wheels, which is higher than some rivals: the BMW 328i, for example, uses 6.3L/100km even on 19-inch wheels.

The engine will drive the rear wheels through an eight-speed automatic transmission - an adapted version of the Lexus Sport Direct Shift unit that was developed for the RC F.

It features paddleshifters, and is the first Lexus sedan with the technology to vary gear shifts in accordance with G forces: "The transmission automatically downshifts during hard braking before a corner then holds a lower gear through the corner for best control and then selects the most suitable gear on corner exit to give the driver greater throttle response."

UPDATE:

Lexus Australia has confirmed the IS200t will replace the IS250 when it arrives in September. Pricing and local specification will be announced at the time of launch.

The IS250 that is currently sold here uses a 2.5-litre V6 petrol that produces 153kW/252Nm and uses 9.2L/100km - so, less power, less torque and higher consumption than the new model. The new IS200t will form a solid entry point to the range, slotting below the more powerful IS350 (3.5-litre V6 with 233kW/378Nm; fuel use 9.8L/100km).

In a statement from Lexus Australia, the company's chief executive, Sean Hanley, said the new turbo engine will be a great fit for the IS.

"This very advanced engine has already proven itself and been valued by Lexus customers in the NX 200t," Hanley said. "It will also be extremely well matched to the IS 200t, delivering excellent performance and fuel efficiency to complement the driving pleasure already offered by the IS."
