Alfa Romeo Giulia to be unveiled this week in Milan

An all-new midsize premium sedan, the Alfa Romeo Giulia, will have its world debut on Wednesday June 24 at the Alfa Romeo museum in Arese, outside Milan, where the carmaker was based from 1963 until Fiat took control of the brand in 1986.

The success of the Giulia - if that's what it will be called (that's the name that has been assumed since the late 2000s, but the Italian brand has yet to confirm it) - is crucial to Alfa Romeo’s ongoing survival and as such, brings an entirely new chassis, a new design language and brand-new engines and transmissions.

The Giulia will sit on Alfa’s all-new rear-wheel drive / all-wheel drive Giorgio platform that will offer high-performance engines, including a range-topping Ferrari-sourced twin-turbo V6 from the Maserati Quattroporte and Ghibli sedans.

Key to the range will be an entry-level 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine in several states of tune, as well as a suite of turbo diesels including a 3.0-litre V6, also borrowed from Maserati.

Alfa Romeo is touting the new Giulia as a BMW 3 Series rival and is expected to arrive in European showrooms in February or March next year.

Discounting the 4C and upcoming 4C Spider, the Giulia will spearhead a succession of new, high-volume models including, a new rear-wheel drive Giulietta in 2016, as well and a midsize SUV that will challenge the Audi Q5, BMW X3 and Mercedes-Benz GLC.

Alfa will also build a large premium sedan based on the Ghibli that will rival the Audi A6BMW 5 Series and Mercedes-Benz E-Class.

Stay tuned for all the images and details of the all-new Alfa Romeo Giulia on Wednesday.
