Jeep Grand Cherokee Hellcat confirmed – report

Will it be called the Hellcat? Or the Trackhawk? That's probably the biggest question that remains over a new high-performance version of the Jeep Grand Cherokee following reports that such a model has reportedly been confirmed for production

According to US site Motor Authority, the hardcore Jeep Grand Cherokee model falls under the codename Project K, and it will use the same 6.2-litre supercharged HEMI V8 engine that is seen in the monstrous Dodge Charger Hellcat, with power outputs expected to be identical to that car - meaning a whopping 527kW and 880Nm.

That, according to an insider who is said to have spoken with the site, will push the big SUV from 0-60 miles per hour (96km/h) in "less than three seconds". That'd make it faster than the quickest Porsche Cayenne - the Turbo S - which hits 60mph in 3.8sec (or 0-100km/h in 4.1sec).

The top speed is said to be a huge 320km/h, which is also higher than the Porsche Cayenne (284km/h).

No matter the name, this monster Jeep Grand Cherokee looks certain to move the goalposts for fast SUVs, not to mention well and truly trounce the current flagship model, the Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT. It has a 6.4-litre HEMI V8 producing 324kW/644Nm, and can jump from nought to highway speed in a 4.8sec.

Sales of the Jeep Grand Cherokee are down this year by 22 per cent. The large SUV is still one of the most popular in the nation, ranking second behind the Toyota LandCruiser Prado so far in 2015.
