2016 Toyota Prado engine details revealed

The 2016 Toyota Prado update, due in August this year, will receive a new 2.8-litre four-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine mated to either a six-speed automatic or manual transmission.

Shared with the 2016 Toyota HiLux, engineers have been able to reduce the engine's fuel consumption by up to 13.0 per cent over its predecessor by using lighter weight materials and reducing internal friction. The adoption of a diesel particulate filter has also allowed Toyota to achieve Euro 5 emissions compliance.

Producing 130kW of power and 450Nm of torque in six-speed automatic form, the new 2.8-litre engine steps up 3kW of power and 40Nm of torque over the outgoing 3.0-litre diesel engine. A six-speed manual is also available, while power output remains the same, torque reduces to 420Nm.

Fuel consumption has improved by over 10 per cent for the manual version in comparison to the outgoing Prado, now a combined 7.9L/100km. Equally, the automatic has benefitted from a fuel efficiency saving, now consuming 8.0L/100km on the combined cycle.

Designated 1GD-FTV, the diesel engine uses an electronically controlled common-rail fuel-injection system and piezo injectors. These features work with a water-cooled gas recirculation system to provide a facility for higher levels of combustion efficiency.

Toyota claims to have reduced engine noise by playing with the shapes of the intake and exhaust gas recirculation ports to limit combustion noise in each cylinder.

Toyota Australia's executive director sales and marketing Tony Cramb said the new 2.8-litre engine will bring even higher levels of performance.

"The new Prado engine is better in every way - more power and torque, better fuel economy and reliability, and advanced smoothness and quiet operation," Mr Cramb said.

"Higher engine outputs make it easier to drive, especially with new levels of low-down torque that promote strong traction, acceleration and pulling power when needed," he said.

"In addition, the impressively quiet and smooth engine results in a more comfortable atmosphere in the cabin."

The new engine is set to become available in the Prado from August.
