2016 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV facelift spied

The 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV has been photographed completely undisguised in Japan, revealing the updated model’s revised exterior design for the first time.

These images, which first appeared on Japanese blog livedoor.jp, confirm the facelifted PHEV will adopt many of the cosmetic enhancements of the regular 2016 Outlander range, giving it a distinctly different look to the model it replaces.

The images confirm the updated, 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV remains largely faithful to the Outlander PHEV Concept-S that debuted the sharper design language at October’s Paris motor show.

The front-end gets a total overhaul, donning new, more angular headlights, twin chrome grille crossbars, X-shaped chrome bumper highlights, a larger lower air intake and a prominent silver lower lip.

The rear gets the 2016 Outlander’s rejigged red tail-lights with a thick chrome bar joining them across the tailgate.

The PHEV appears to be differentiated from the regular Outlander by its unique silver and gloss black alloy wheels and its more aggressive lower skirts.

Similar spy photographs of the 2016 Outlander were captured in the weeks leading up to its unveiling in April, suggesting the Outlander PHEV is likely to rolled out officially in the not too distant future.

Mitsubishi Australia product communications manager John Taylor couldn’t shed any new light on when the updated Outlander PHEV would arrive in local showrooms, confirming that it was still on track to reach our shores before the end of this year.

It’s unclear at this stage if there will be any updates to the PHEV’s plug-in hybrid powertrain. Speaking with CarAdvice in April, Mitsubishi Motors manager of C- and D-segment product development projects Takao Matsui said his team was “looking to enhance” the PHEV’s electric range, which is currently claimed to be 52 kilometres.

The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV combines a pair of electric motors (one at each angle), two inverters, a generator and a 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine.

The Outlander PHEV costs $47,490 plus on-road costs in base spec and $52,490 in Aspire trim.
