As we revealed last week, the updated A1 starts $400 higher than before at $26,900 plus on-road costs, though significantly, the price of the entry-level automatic variant is $4000 lower than before – now $28,250 – which should open the premium five-door hatch up to a number of new buyers.
The prices above apply to the new base-grade Audi A1 (the Attraction name is gone), which is powered by a new 70kW/160Nm 1.0-litre three-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine. The new triple pairs with five-speed manual and seven-speed dual-clutch S tronic transmissions, and is up to 17 per cent more fuel efficient than the 1.2-litre four-cylinder turbo it replaces.
Standard features include 15-inch alloy wheels, auto headlights and wipers, rear parking sensors, cruise control, multifunction leather steering wheel (with paddleshifters for S tronic), an eight-speaker sound system, and the MMI radio with 6.5-inch colour screen, CD player, SDHC memory card reader, Audi music interface and Bluetooth phone connectivity with audio streaming.
The mid-tier Audi A1 Sport (replacing Ambition spec) variants get an updated version of the carryover 1.4-litre four-cylinder turbo petrol engine with 92kW and 200Nm (up 2kW). Six-speed manual and seven-speed S tronic transmission options are available for $27,750 and $30,100 respectively.
The pricing makes the A1 Sport just $850 more than the equivalent base model in manual form and $1850 more with the S tronic, yet along with the more powerful engine it also gains larger 16-inch alloys, front foglights, climate control, Audi drive select driving modes, LED interior lighting package, and upgraded interior trim and upholstery.
The flagship A1 S line (replaces previous Sport) retains its $39,900 price tag and upgrades from its twincharged 1.4-litre engine to a 141kW/250Nm 1.8-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol powerplant. The performance variant is no quicker than before (0-100km/h in 6.9 seconds) but is now more fuel efficient (down to 5.6 litres per 100 kilometres).
Standard features exclusive to the S line include 17-inch alloy wheels, sports suspension, xenon plus headlights with LED daytime running lights, auto-dimming rear-view mirror, 10-speaker sound system with amplifier and subwoofer, and MMI navigation plus with high-resolution screen, DVD player, two SDHC memory card readers, voice control and 20GB hard drive for music storage.
Unfortunately, a reverse-view camera isn’t available in the A1, not even as an option.
The 1.6-litre four-cylinder diesel engine has been dropped from the local A1 line-up after the old variant accounted for less than one per cent of sales.
Audi is targeting a modest sales increase off the back of the updated A1 Sportback range, hoping to sell 160 per month, up from its current monthly average of about 140.
