2015 Ford Mustang :: Australian deposits top 2000, six months from launch

Ford Australia says it has now taken more than 2000 deposits from prospective buyers for the new Mustang, about six months out from the car’s local launch late in 2015.

The Blue Oval brand has been fielding interest since late 2013, when it confirmed it would import the new model for the first time in years. As recently as December 2014 it held about 600 deposits, but interest appears to have spiked since it announced pricing in March this year.

“As soon as Ford announced Mustang was coming to Australia, our phones started ringing. A few customers even made deposits before pricing and specifications were confirmed. I’ve never seen anything quite like it,” said Bayford Group Victoria dealer principal David Blackwood.

The sharper-than-expected opening gambit for the EcoBoost four-cylinder turbo-powered Fastback version is $44,990 plus on-roads, while the V8 version will cost from $54,990. Convertible versions will command $6500 premiums.

Despite the focus in part being on the entry car’s price, the “unprecedented” early demand for Ford’s newest pony car is instead being driven by the flagship GT Fastback automatic with the 5.0-litre V8 engine option. About 42 per cent of orders are for this iteration, Ford says.

In time, though, Ford expects the make-up to shift.

“Just like in America, we are seeing great early demand for the V8 GT models,” said Ford Australia president and CEO Graeme Whickman. “But, we think the EcoBoost model will be a bigger seller longer term and help sustain sales longer than most performance cars…”

Ford says that several Mustang enthusiasts, including members of the various state-based Mustang clubs, have ordered more than one variant of the famous car. One customer has six orders to his name while a sports car rental company has placed an order for 20.

Australian customers overwhelmingly have favoured Race Red as the most popular colour choice, followed up Absolute Black and Magnetic.

Ford also confirmed the Performance Pack will come standard for all Mustang models. This package includes “K Brace” under the bonnet to secure the suspension strut towers to the bulkhead, unique chassis tuning, an upsized rear sway bar on the Fastback and heavy duty front springs. All variants also get a rear limited-slip differential.
