Seat Leon ST Cupra becomes fastest wagon around the Nurburgring

The Spanish marque claims that its Seat Leon ST Cupra wagon is now the fastest production wagon to have lapped the Nurburgring Nordschleife.

As part of its presentation for the Worthersee festival that's currently taking place in Austria, Seat announced that the front-wheel drive Leon ST Cupra completed a lap of the famed Nordschleife in 7:58.12 minutes.

This feat was achieved with Spanish racing driver Jordi Gene behind the wheel. The wagon in question was equipped with the standard six-speed manual transmission and a limited slip differential.

Powering the Golf-size Leon ST Cupra around the Nurburgring was a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine that has a maximum output of 209kW of power and 350Nm of torque.

With a curb weight of 1466kg, the ST Cupra has a claimed 0-100km/h time of 6.1 seconds and a top speed of 250km/h.

The wagon's time is faster than the 7:58.44 lap recorded by a Leon Cupra 280 hatch back in March 2014. That car broke a three-year-old record for the fastest front-wheel drive car around the Nordschleife.

In June 2014, Renault regained the FWD crown when its Megane RS275 Trophy-R managed a time of 7:54.36.

At last year's Paris motor show, Juergen Stackmann, Seat's CEO, told Car Advice that the Spanish brand could re-enter the Australian market as early as 2016 when the company begins production of its first ever SUV.

Seat cars were sold briefly in Australia during the late 1990s.
