Nissan Australia recalls 102,000 vehicles over Takata airbag defect

The latest recall affects Nissan models from the 2004 to 2007 model years equipped with ‘SPI’ inflators. About 10,300 Nissan models sold in New Zealand are also affected by the recall, which affects more than 1.5 million Nissan vehicles around the world.

The recall is linked to yesterday’s announcement from Toyota Australia that it is recalling about 181,000 vehicles built between 2003 and 2007 fitted with the same faulty Takata airbag components.

Nissan says it is currently in the process of studying the exact models and quantities affected by the latest recall. CarAdvice will update this story when these details are announced.

Once confirmed, Nissan Australia will begin contacting customers affected by the recall as soon as parts are available, and says the recall will be conducted at no cost to customers.

This latest recall is the fourth Takata-related recall announced by Nissan Australia following one in April 2013 affecting 11,360 models built between 2000 and 2004 with defective passenger-side airbag inflators, an expansion of that recall in June 2014 affecting another 25,941 vehicles produced between 2001 and 2003, and a recall of 12,859 Micra models built in 2010 and 2011 in November 2014 with defective driver-side airbag inflators.
