Audi TT 1.8 TFSI base model revealed, under consideration for Australia

The 2015 Audi TT range could expand at the end of this year with a new base model, the 1.8 TFSI, which was unveiled overnight.

The new entry-level 1.8 TFSI version of the fourth-generation Audi TT is no underpowered runabout, with the German brand claiming the new model - with 132kW of power and 250Nm of torque, which spans 1250-5000rpm - can sprint from 0-100km/h in a hot-hatch-like 6.9 seconds for the manual or 7.0sec for the six-speed S tronic dual-clutch automatic.

The 1.8 TFSI will be available in Coupe and Roadster guise, with the drop-top version a little slower in terms of its claimed sprint times (7.2sec for the manual and 7.3sec for the S tronic). Top speed for all 1.8TFSI models is 237km/h.

Fuel consumption for the Coupe is between 5.7 and 6.0 litres per 100km depending on transmission, while the Roadster sips a little more, claimed at between 5.8L-6.1L/100km.

Audi says the standard items list for the new 1.8 TFSI model remains lengthy, including "sport seats with integral head restraints", "progressive steering" and "the Audi virtual cockpit".

Audi Australia general manager marketing, Kevin Goult, confirmed the local arm is looking at the 1.8 TFSI for local buyers.

"While there was a 1.8 TFSI engine in the former Audi TT line-up, the new 2.0 TFSI engine brought both power and efficiency gains when it arrived in the all-new third-generation TT," Goult said.

“We are currently evaluating the new 1.8 TFSI engine’s potential in the current range, but any introduction would not occur before the end of the year,” he said.

Audi Australia has ruled out offering the 2.0 TDI ultra turbo diesel version, which has 135kW and 380Nm and claimed consumption of just 4.2L/100km.

The standard Audi TT sold here is a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine that pumps out 169kW/370Nm, while the TT S model that is set to arrive later this year employs the same engine but in a higher state of tune (228kW/380Nm).
