Honda named UK’s most reliable vehicle brand

Honda has been named the UK’s most reliable vehicle manufacturer for the ninth consecutive year according to research conducted by What Car? and Warranty Direct.

Honda topped 36 other brands in the 2015 edition of the annual Reliability Index, which analysed 50,000 live Warranty Direct policies on three- to eight-year-old vehicles.

Japanese and South Korean car makers dominated the survey, with Suzuki and Toyota completing the podium, and nine of the top 12 brands hailing from one of the two Asian nations.

Chevrolet (equal fourth with Mazda), Ford (sixth) and Skoda (eighth) were the only non-Asian brands to break into the top-end of the reliability rankings.

Lexus ranked seventh while Hyundai, Nissan and Subaru all tied in ninth position.

The Index calculates vehicles’ reliability using a complex formula that takes into account their age, mileage, failure rate, and cost of repair, then ranks them according to their score.

Luxury brands are typically hit hard in the Reliability Index due to their high repair costs.

This year Bentley ranked at the bottom of the tally, while Porsche rated just one place higher. Follow premium marques BMW (28th), Jaguar (30th), Mercedes-Benz (32nd) and Audi (34th) joined them in the bottom 10.

Peugeot (12th) was the best placed of the French brands, beating Citroen (15th) and Renault (21st), while Volkswagen (23rd) ranked above more prestigious Europeans Volvo (25th) and Land Rover (27th).

The survey ranked the Honda Jazz and Mitsubishi Lancer as the most reliable three- to eight-year-old vehicles.
