2016 Mitsubishi Outlander pricing & specifications

The updated MY16 Mitsubishi Outlander has arrived in Australia just a fortnight after making its global debut at the 2015 New York auto show.

The heavily updated mid-size SUV sports an entirely new look, with the brand’s bold ‘dynamic shield’ styling language the most noticeable change for the updated Outlander.

The exterior revisions include a new front end encompassing a broad bumper intake and strong design lines, not to mention reshaped headlights and front guards.

The rear has also received big changes, with a revised tailgate, new rear light housings and a new rear bumper.

But Mitsubishi claims that under the skin is where some of the biggest changes have occurred.

There is more body and suspension structural rigidity, redesigned suspension and electric power steering, noise-isolating windscreen and tailgate glass, more sound insulation throughout the vehicle, and new front suspension and rear differential dampers.

Additionally, the new generation continuously-variable transmission (CVT) apparently offers improved acceleration, performance, shift feel and torque delivery.

Meanwhile the cabin gets a new steering wheel, and more ‘premium grade’ materials in the seat trim, headliner and on the interior accents.

Here’s a list of the updates, according to Mitsubishi:

  • Painted silver grille with chrome plating
  • Side door garnish
  • Silver skid plate
  • Chrome accent front bumper
  • Fog lamp bezel
  • Sharper rear styling with chrome tailgate accents, new design rear bumper
and silver skid plate
  • Black wheel arch mouldings design
  • Daylight Running Lamps (DRLs)
  • LED headlamp (Exceed only)
  • LED rear combination lamp (continues on to tailgate edges)
  • Rear fog lamp
  • New design 18-inch alloy wheels
  • New design steering wheel with piano black bezel
  • IP surround stitching
  • Soft type centre console armrest
  • New design decoration panel
  • Improved seat comfort – improved lateral support, side bolsters stiffness
  • New black cloth seating trim with stitching detail
  • Electro chromatic rear view mirror
  • New headlining – knitted fabric material rather than non-woven
  • Improved NVH through extensive use of sound and vibration absorbing materials and dynamic dampers (39 places overall)
  • Improved quality of door closure through revised door seal structure
  • Improved straight-line stability and ride comfort
  • Increased steering response and precision
  • New generation CVT for petrol models with enhanced acceleration feel from a
standing start, across the rev range and overtaking. Shift quality also improved (less
throttle input required)
  • Improved fuel economy on CVT models
  • New model line-up name changes
  • New exterior colour (Ironbark)

Engine options include: a 2.0-litre four-cylinder producing 110kW/190Nm with the choice of five-speed manual or CVT automatic transmission; a 2.4-litre four-cylinder petrol engine producing 124kW/220Nm, available solely with CVT automatic; and a 2.2-litre turbo diesel four-cylinder producing 110kW/360Nm with a six-speed automatic transmission.

Fuel savings for the petrol models see the 2.0-litre dip from 6.9 litres per 100 kilometres to 6.7L/100km for the CVT variants (manual dips from 7.1L to 7.0L/100km), while the 2.4-litre dips from 7.5L to 7.2L. The diesel remains stable in terms of consumption at 6.2L/100km.

At this point in time the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV should arrive later this year, with that model likely to see some minor exterior styling differentiators.

The base model LS is available as a front-wheel drive model, with five seats standard. That model is the only variant with a manual transmission option.

Buyers can choose an LS variant with four-wheel drive, and that version comes with the 2.4-litre four-cylinder automatic drivetrain.

The top-end two-wheel drive model is the XLS, which has the same 2.0-litre front-drive powertrain with the CVT automatic as standard. That model comes with five seats, too.

Seven seats are standard on the XLS 4WD and Exceed 4WD models.
