Tesla Motors confirms Supercharger in Goulburn, allowing electric travel between Sydney and Canberra

Tesla Motors Australia has announced it will build a Supercharger Station in Goulburn, between Sydney and Canberra, which it says will allow "free long-distance travel" between Australia's most populated city and the country's capital.

The new Tesla Supercharger will be "conveniently located off the Hume Highway", with the new fast-charge station - which can add up to 270 kilometres of EV range by charging for 30 minutes, or a full charge in about an hour - to have eight usable charge points.

"Superchargers are designed for city to city travel, allowing Tesla Model S electric vehicle drivers to travel for about three hours, take a quick break, and get back on the road charged up," a statement from the company said.

It is believed Tesla will expand the Supercharger network in Australia to stretch from Sydney south to Melbourne, and north towards Brisbane and beyond by the end of 2016. Currently there are only two Supercharger stations in Australia, both in Sydney: one in Pyrmont, and one in St Leonards.

Tesla recently changed its model line-up to enable free access to Supercharger locations to all buyers. Previously, the base model 60 variant required buyers to option Supercharger access for $3000.

Tesla has 415 Supercharger Stations (where there are multiple charge points) and 2285 individual Superchargers (including those at the Stations and others located at hotels and in car parks) worldwide.
