Citroen Aircross concept unveiled

The Citroen Aircross concept has been unveiled, days after an undisguised image of it leaked out thanks to a French motoring magazine.

Details about the Aircross's plug-in hybrid drivetrain and likelihood for production are being held back, possibly until the car's public unveiling later this month.

According to Citroen, the design of the Aircross draws upon the template set out by the C4 Cactus, the intriguingly styled back-to-basics crossover hatch, which took home the Design of the Year prize at last week's 2015 World Car of the Year awards.

Instead of the Cactus's repair cost-reducing air bumps, the Aircross features alloy bumps and air signs, although Citroen has yet to give us any indication what the latter does.

Access to the Aircross is helped by the concept's rear suicide doors and the lack of a B-pillar.

The Aircross' dashboard features a head-up display and two 12-inch high-resolution screens. One is located behind the steering wheel, replacing the usual instrument panel, while the other can be slid along runners from the centre of the dash to directly in front of the front passenger.

Tyson Bowen, public relations manager for Citroen Australia, told Car Advice, "It's a concept, it's very cool and we'd love to see it go into production".

The Citroen Aircross concept will have its public debut at the Shanghai auto show, which takes place later this month.

Citroen says that the unveiling of the Aircross is meant, partially, to celebrate the brand's 50 millionth car sale. It also underlines the importance of China to its continued survival, with the middle kingdom now accounting for 25 percent of the marque's global sales and its single largest market.
