2016 Holden Barina Spark : Holden’s localised tuning for the South Korean car

Revealed at the 2015 Seoul motor show, the new Chevrolet Spark paves the way to local release of the new Holden Barina Spark locally in 2016.

Australian engineers were involved in the development process of the Barina Spark, so it's likely the handling, ride and mechanics will see reasonable improvement over its predecessor.

The new Chevrolet Spark debuts with a host of impressive safety features previously unseen in this segment. These include blind spot monitoring, lane departure warning and forward collision alert. The car also comes with up to 10 airbags and a reverse view camera.

When asked about the level of Australian input in Chevrolet Spark production, president and CEO of GM Korea, Sergio Rocha, commended the Australian engineering and design teams for their work.

"The whole design and engineering job was led by the team here in Korea, in collaboration with the global design and engineering community."Rocha said.

"We have an activity program called peer review, this is where any touches on this car provided by the Australian team were implemented. These changes have been incorporated and this is the collaborative way we work in GM," Rocha said.

Rocha was quizzed about the level of standard safety features in the Spark and whether the Australian team was instrumental on that approach.

"Yes, we do these types of things [lane departure warning, forward collision alert] to attend to our global market demands. We understand the local requirements for safety and in this mini car, or A-segment, it's a set of features that even some B and C-segment cars don't even offer today."

Ian Butler, Holden Director of Vehicle Performance, said the Holden engineering team had a great deal of involvement developing this car for the global market.

“Even though this is a truly global car our engineers have been working hard to tailor the vehicle to ensure it resonates with our customers in Australia,” Mr. Butler said.

“The car will feature unique suspension and steering tunes following thousands of kilometres and months of extensive work at our Lang Lang proving ground and on public roads.

“We made sure the car remains fun and agile but will now deliver even more sophistication.”
