Porsche Boxster Spyder revealed

The 2015 Porsche Boxster Spyder has been revealed ahead of its global premiere in the metal at the New York motor show and Australian launch around September.

Likes its predecessor, this iteration of a famous nameplate exemplifies lightness with features such as its hand-operated fabric roof.

There’s also the signature fabric fins that stretch back to the rear, giving the silhouette its characteristic design. The front and rear sections take cues from the new Cayman GT4.

It also has something more mechanical in common with the GT4: like its hardcore sibling, it will also be offered with a six-speed manual gearbox only. No self-shifters here.

Porsche says the Boxster Spyder has a 20mm lower ride height than the regular Boxster, and it has also added the bigger brakes from the 911 Carrera and made the steering even more direct.

The Spyder’s 3.8-litre six-cylinder boxer engine pumps out 276kW, which is 33kW more than the 3.4 in Boxster GTS, but 7kW less than the 3.8 used in the Cayman GT4.

This still makes it the most powerful Boxster you can buy.

The Spyder has a recorded 0-100km/h sprint time of around 4.5 seconds — 0.5s faster than the Boxster GTS — and a claimed top speed of 290km/h. NEDC overall fuel consumption is a very respectable 9.9 litres per 100 km.

The distinctive design has elements that recall famed sports and race cars from a bygone Porsche era. For example, the company says, it pays tribute to the 718 Spyder from the 1960s with its two prominent streamlined bulges that extend down along the rear lid behind the headrests.

More so than in any other Boxster,” the company says, “the interior of the new top model creates an atmosphere of driving fun”. The driver and passenger sit in light sports bucket seats with large side supports, while there’s a new steering wheel with a diameter of 360mm.

Versions of the new 981 Spyder to be sold in other markets adopt what Porsche calls a “minimal specification” — read, no sat-nav or air-con — but models bound for Australia will have more equipment to “meet market requirements”.

Features included as standard include: Porsche Communication Management (PCM) incorporating sat-nav, the company’s superior sound package, cruise control, heated seats and dual-zone air conditioning.

The new Boxster Spyder will arrive in Australia in the third quarter of 2015, priced from $169,000 plus on-road costs. This is $23,500 more than the GTS version. The Cayman GT4, by comparison, will cost $190,300 when it arrives around the same time as the Spyder.
