Richard Branson reveals Virgin engineers are working on electric cars

Billionaire, entrepreneur and lover of fast forms of transport Richard Branson says his Virgin empire could one day take on Tesla with an electric car of its own.

Speaking with Bloomberg from the garage of the Formula E Virgin Racing team in Miami, Branson suggested the idea of a Virgin EV wasn’t as far-flung as it may seem.

“We have teams of people working on electric cars,” he revealed, “so you never know – you may find Virgin competing with the Tesla car business as we do in the space business. We will see what happens.”

Along with commercial space flight venture Virgin Galactic, the Virgin brand name appears on trains, planes, and soon on cruise ships – the global road network seemingly being the final frontier.

Branson praised the work of Tesla CEO Elon Musk and the cars his company was creating, admitting, “Tesla is as sexy as any other car on the road today”.

The automotive industry could be a very different place in the not-so-distant future, with or without Virgin electric vehicles. Internet powerhouse Google has been developing a driverless car for much of this decade, while technology dynamo Apple was linked last month to a top-secret electric car project of its own.
