The entry-level CX-3 Neo front-wheel drive petrol manual kicks off the range at $19,990 before on-road costs, undercutting baby SUV segment’s previous entry point, the $20,790 Ford EcoSport, as well as the cheapest versions of the Nissan Juke, Peugeot 2008, Renault Captur and Honda HR-V, to name a few.
Mazda Australia is offering 14 unique configurations of the CX-3, comprising four variants (Neo, Maxx, sTouring and Akari), two drive systems (front- and all-wheel drive), two four-cylinder engines (2.0-litre petrol and 1.5-litre diesel) and two transmissions (six-speed manual and automatic), as it aims to sell 1000 of its Mazda 2-based crossovers across the country every month.
The entry-grade CX-3 Neo is available exclusively in front-wheel-drive petrol configuration, while the Maxx, sTouring and Akari trims can be had in front-drive petrol, and all-wheel-drive petrol and diesel combinations.
The step from Neo to Maxx is $2400, from Maxx to sTouring is $4600, and from sTouring to Akari is $4300. The automatic transmission costs $2000 over the manual, AWD adds another $2000 over 2WD, and diesel adds $3400 over petrol.
Mazda is also offering a $1030 Safety pack on Neo, Maxx and sTouring that adds a blind spot monitor, rear cross-traffic alert, and smart city brake support (all standard on Akari), while the Kuroi black styling pack similar to that available on the Mazda 3 is available across the range for $2342.
Mazda Australia expects the Maxx to be the runaway favourite with buyers, accounting for 55 per cent of CX-3 sales, followed by the Neo at 25 per cent, the sTouring at 15 per cent and the Akari at five per cent. The majority of buyers are tipped to opt for front-drive petrol auto vehicles.
The Neo is modestly equipped, coming standard with 16-inch steel wheels, rear parking sensors, cruise control, cloth upholstery and a basic four-speaker audio system.
For the likes of 16-inch alloys, leather-wrapped steering wheel, gearshifter and handbrake, and the MZD Connect infotainment system with 7.0-inch touchscreen, satellite navigation, reverse-view camera, internet radio integration and multi-function rotary commander you need to step up to the Maxx.
The sTouring gains 18-inch alloys, along with LED lights all round, auto headlights and wipers, keyless entry, head-up display and climate control, while the flagship Akari gets the safety pack features plus high beam control, a power glass sunroof, and black leather/suede or white leather/suede upholstery.
The Mazda CX-3 is 4275mm long, 1765mm wide, 1550mm tall, and rides on a 2570mm wheelbase. Its boot measures 264 litres and expands to 1174L with the 60:40 split fold rear seats pushed forwards.
