Apple CarPlay destined for “more than 40” new vehicles this year

Apple’s CarPlay infotainment system will appear in “more than 40” new vehicles before the end of this year as the technology giant continues its integration into the automotive world.

At the company’s ‘Spring Forward’ announcement today, at which the Apple Watch was detailed, Apple CEO Tim Cook confirmed every “major” vehicle manufacturer has now signed on to feature CarPlay in its future models.

Apple CarPlay – announced about a year ago – is software installed in a car’s infotainment system that integrates the core functions of a paired iPhone into the car, displaying a simplified version of Apple’s iOS in place of the car’s regular media display.

CarPlay allows drivers and passengers to interact with iPhone’s personal assistant, Siri, to use the phone’s calling and messaging functions, maps and navigation, and audio streaming functions, including third-party applications such as Pandora and Spotify.

CarAdvice tested CarPlay in an aftermarket system produced by Pioneer last year. You can see our video and read the story here.

A handful of models headed to Australia will feature CarPlay technology this year, with the Volvo XC90 and Suzuki Vitara to be among the first to offer it on our shores.
