Volkswagen Sport Coupe Concept GTE sketches out new VW design language

Sketches of the Volkswagen Sport Coupe Concept GTE, which will debut at the 2015 Geneva motor show, have been posted online.

According to the Wolfsburg-based company, the Sport Coupe Concept GTE is the "champion of a new progressive Volkswagen design language".

In the words of Walter de Silva, Volkswagen's design chief: "Evolution and revolution come together in the Sport Coupe Concept GTE. This concept is based on Volkswagen design DNA, which has been visibly sharpened even more".

In all likelihood, the Sport Coupe Concept GTE also points the way to the design of the next-generation Volkswagen CC. The new CC will be based on the company's MQB component matrix and should be very closely related to the upcoming Passat.

Under the skin, the Sport Coupe Concept GTE is said to feature a plug-in hybrid electric drivetrain comprised of a turbocharged petrol engine and two electric motors.

Given that Volkswagen claims that the car has an "innovative all-wheel drive [system] via electric propshaft", it's likely that the four-door "coupe" will feature an electric motor for each axle.

Volkswagen has yet to detail the concept car's dimensions, power output and fuel economy figures. These details will likely surface, along with the car itself, at next week's Geneva show.
