2016 Range Rover Evoque unveiled with new styling, engines and technology

The 2016 Range Rover Evoque will debut at this year's Geneva motor show bearing a slightly revised design, updated technology and a range of new engine options.

The powertrain offerings for the facelifted Range Rover Evoque will see the compact model become the "most efficient Land Rover ever", according to the British brand.

The 2.0-litre Ingenium diesel four-cylinder model is set to use just 4.4 litres per 100 kilometres in the base six-speed manual, front-drive version of the TD4 (110kW/380Nm). The more powerful TD4 has 132kW/430Nm and uses 4.8L/100km in four-wheel-drive manual configuration.

As well as front- or four-wheel drive, the TD4 can be optioned with a nine-speed automatic gearbox.

The new Ingenium 2.0-litre turbo petrol engine isn't available yet, though the existing Si4 unit can be had with standard four-wheel drive and a nine-speed automatic. It produces 177kW and 340Nm, and can run from 0-100km/h in a claimed 7.6 seconds. Fuel use is claimed at 7.8L/100km for the petrol, and all engines have stop-start technology.

The new model will see the introduction of the British off-road specialist's All-Terrain Progress Control system that has filtered down from the larger Range Rover and Range Rover Sport models. The technology is designed as a "stress reducer" when the driver is tackling tricky terrain, and can maintain a pre-determined speed using the cruise control function (in forward or reverse gears) of between 1.8km/h and 30km/h.

The trim lines for the new model have been revised to match up to the bigger Rangie models with the Pure, Dynamic and Prestige models to make way for Pure, SE, HSE, HSE Dynamic and Autobiography variants.

In terms of styling changes, there's a new front bumper with larger air intakes and slim-line LED fog-lights, two new grille designs depending on the model, optional LED headlight units and three new alloy wheel options.

Five-door HSE Dynamic and Autobiography models now get the eye-catching bonnet vents previously reserved for the three-door "coupe" model, and all get a new rear spoiler with slimmer LED tail-lights.

Inside, the Evoque gets updated seats and revised doors, a new InControl infotainment system driven by an 8.0-inch touchscreen media unit, and there will likely be a range of optional packs including rear video screens with wireless headphones, as well as 11- or 17-speaker Meridian audio systems (the standard car will have six speakers).

The Evoque will also get a new hands-free tailgate function, which "allows owners to automatically open and close the tailgate by waving a foot beneath the rear bumper", and the brand claims it also works at the side of the car, not just when you stand directly behind.

Other safety additions include the optional lane-keeping assist system (which uses a stereo camera to monitor the road and applies steering intervention to keep things on track), while autonomous emergency braking is fitted as standard, offering full brake intervention below 50km/h, while also working up to 80km/h to "reduce the severity of an impact".

Land Rover's local arm has confirmed the new model will be offered in the first quarter of 2016. Expect pricing and specifications to be announced for the 2016 Range Rover Evoque later this year.
