2015 Audi R8 teased with laser headlights
The mid-engined Audi R8 will be offered with laser high-beam lights, with the German brand describing the new illumination system — which has been seen previously on the Audi R8 LMX (pictured below) as "the first of a number of technology highlights of the top sports car".
The headlight system uses LEDs "which can be supplemented by a laser high-beam lighting module as an option", the brand has confirmed. Audi claims laser lighting "uses high-intensity laser diodes, which generate a lot of light energy from a very small component".
Audi has confirmed LED headlights will be offered as standard across all R8 models, but the brand claims that "compared to LED high-beam headlights, laser high-beams attain nearly twice the lighting range".
The headlight assemblies contain one laser module which comprises four high-intensity laser diodes, which bundle and pass through a phosphor convertor that "transforms the blue light into pure white light".
CarAdvice has reported on spy images of the 2015 Audi R8 in the past, and a leaked image purportedly showing the form of the all-new model surfaced last week (see below).
Expect the new-generation Audi R8 in Audi Australia showrooms in 2016.
