Honda Civic Type R can hit a top speed of 270km/h

Key amongst the details is that the new front-wheel drive Civic Type R will have a top speed of 270km/h. To help the first turbocharged Type R model achieve its headline-grabbing maximum velocity, Honda has fitted the car with an almost completely flat underside and a large rear diffuser.

The Civic Type R also comes with a large rear wing, a wider front splitter and prominent side skirts. The Type R rides on unique 19-inch black alloy wheels clad in 235/35 Continental tyres.

To bring the Civic Type R to a standstill, Honda has fitted its new hot hatch with a Brembo braking package, which at the front features 350mm discs and four-piston calipers.

Honda has yet to confirm the exact power and torque figures for the new Civic Type R, but has said in the past that the turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine will deliver over 206kW of power to the front wheels via a six-speed manual transmission.

The photo of the instrumentation pack (above) confirms that the boosted engine will have a redline set at 7000rpm.

To help keep the turbocharged engine cool, amongst other things, Honda's team has fitted the Civic Type R with larger upper and lower grilles at the front, as well as vents at the top and trailing edge of the front quarter panels.

The Honda Civic Type R will have its grand unveiling at March's Geneva motor show, and shouldn't look too dissimilar to the earlier Civic Type R concepts, the first of which debuted at last year's Geneva show and the latter which popped up at the 2014 Paris motor show. The car has been confirmed for Australia, and could arrive on sale here by the end of 2015.

Update: Honda this week said it remained unclear on the Type-R's launch timing for the local market, though it now looks like a 2016 proposition. Honda is hoping for clarification within a few months.
