At this year’s Geneva motor show, the Quant F concept car will be the star attraction at fuel-cell developer NanoFlowcell’s stand.
If the Quant F looks familiar, it’s because the 2015 concept car is a re-engineered and redesigned version of the Quant e-Sportlimousine, which took its bow at the 2014 Geneva motor show.
Aside from a new eye-catching red colour scheme, the Quant F’s body is said to feature a revised carbonfibre monocoque with thinner A-pillars.
Under the skin, the 5.25-metre long Quant F features four electric motors and a new two-speed transmission. Depending on the driving mode and style, the Quant F can switch between all-wheel and rear-wheel drive, with the front axle declutched.
With the foot-to-floor, the Quant F’s four motors can generate a maximum output of 802kW and a peak voltage of 735V. In regular driving the company expects the Quant F’s rating to be closer to 400V.
The earlier Quant e-Sportlimousine featured a drivetrain with a maximum power output of 680kW and peak voltage of 600V.
As with the earlier Quant e-Sportlimousine, the Quant F’s electric motors are fed by a NanoFlowcell ionic fuel-cell “battery”. Whereas hydrogen fuel cells, such as those used in the Toyota Mirai, combine stored hydrogen with atmospheric oxygen to produce water and electricity, the NanoFlowcell setup combines two ionic fluids, one with a positive charge and the other with a negative charge.
The two ionic liquids are stored in separate 250 litre tanks built into the structure of the Quant F’s body. The updated fuel cell delivers a constant 50 amperes of current into a buffer system, and a maximum of 2000A under hard acceleration.
According to NanoFlowcell, the Quant F has a driving range of over 800 kilometres, a 30 percent improvement on last year’s e-Sportlimousine.
