Weekend deals on wheels

Okay, buying an MY14 model will obviously affect your resale later, and you should keep that in mind. But if getting the sharpest deal on an un-driven car is priority number one, then it’s time to strike. 

The deals are all factory-backed, but haggle away and try to do even better. 

Also, be aware, many of these deals technically end Saturday January 31, so if you’re interested, get to your dealer. This story is just a guide on a handful of sharp deals out there, as advertised. 

Hyundai i20 Active three-door

The Hyundai i20 overtook the Mazda 2 last year as Australia’s top-selling light car. Now, you can pick up an MY14 model (before January 31, according to the site) for $13,990 driveaway in three-door 1.4-litre manual guise. 

Better still for those on a budget that may grow in time, Hyundai is asking for no deposit or repayments on the loan (to be repaid over a maximum 60 months) until 2016. That’s a year of cheap motoring. 

The i20 is neither the newest or necessarily the best light car out there, but it’s well-equipped, has five-star ANCAP safety and Hyundai’s long five-year warranty.

Suzuki S-Cross GL

This small crossover isn’t exactly the last word in excitement, but 2014 compliance plated versions are going for $22,990 driveaway with a free CVT auto thrown in for good measure. 

Given it normally goes for $25,490 plus on-roads costs (about $3000) that’s a fair saving. It’s also one of the cheapest ways into a reliable and safe family car with five-star NCAP rating.

Toyota Camry Altise

We’ve included the Camry in here before, but here goes. Heck, I’ve even recommended them before, as I espoused in an Op Ed here. 

There’s a reason this fleet-friendly Australian-made offering dominates the dwindling mid-sized sedan market in sales.

Once again, Toyota is doing deals on the Altise auto for $26,990 driveaway. You get a reversing camera, 16-inch alloys, free metallic paint and five-star ANCAP safety. You also get a bulletproof family car with four-year/75,000km of capped-price servicing at $140 per visit. 

Look, it’s not inspiring or fast or sexy, but it’s big, honest and damn cheap if you don’t mind driving a taxi.

MY14 Holden Commodore SV6

Small wonder sales of the VF Commodore are holding out to a level no other large car can match (though they aren’t a patch on what they were a decade ago). 

Holden will do you an SV6 Commodore with 210kW of power for $39,990 driveaway, with a free six-speed auto and services capped at $185 for the first four services (over three-years/60,000km). 

Okay, it’s not a big V8, but the level of equipment on offer is substantial. You get a MyLink infotainment system with eight-inch screen, Automatic Park Assist, a reverse-view camera, front and rear parking sensors, Blind Spot Alert, Reverse Traffic Alert and 18-inch alloys.

But even more intriguingly, Holden isn't asking for any repayments until 2016, and no deposit on purchase either. The same offer applies to the SV6 Ute, which can be had for $34,990 driveaway with auto. 

Thing is, the deal ends tomorrow, the last day of the month… Or so Holden claims.
