Safe, young Queensland drivers to be rewarded with free licences in LNP pre-election promise

Young Queensland drivers who complete their learner and provisional licence periods with a clean record will be rewarded with a free three-year licence if the Liberal National Party is re-elected.

Under the scheme, any driver under 25 about to graduate to their open licence who hasn’t picked up any demerit points will be rewarded with a three-year licence, saving them $118.

Premier Campbell Newman and transport and main roads minister Scott Emerson said the Young Driver Reward Scheme was intended to provide extra incentive for the state’s most vulnerable group of drivers to do the right thing behind the wheel.

“Young drivers aged 16 to 24 represent about a quarter of all road toll fatalities and this initiative forms part of our strong plan to make our roads safer,” Newman said.

Emerson said the scheme would promote safe driving in a positive way and hopefully help reduce accidents, injuries and fatalities on Queensland’s roads.

“This initiative will not only reward young drivers. It will instil safe driving behaviour early on ensuring the ultimate reward is a safer road for all Queenslanders,” he said.

“Already through the LNP’s Road Safety Action Plan the road toll in Queensland in 2014 was a record low and provided the first coordinated approach to delivering better safety for Queensland motorists.”

Queensland’s acting police minister, Andrew Powell, praised the government’s road safety focus earlier this month following confirmation that the state’s 2014 road toll dropped 18 per cent to 223.

“Our strong Liberal National Party team has worked hard to create safer roads for Queenslanders through tougher laws, upgraded roads, and more effective enforcement and education,” Powell said.

“An additional 800 frontline police and our dedicated road policing command have been instrumental in targeting the ‘fatal five’ throughout 2014.

“We have the toughest anti-hooning laws in the country and have lowered speed tolerances to ensure dangerous drivers are caught.”

The 2015 Queensland state election will be held on January 31.
