Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series confirmed

The Mercedes-AMG GT coupe hasn't even hit Australian soil, but that hasn't stopped Mercedes-Benz confirming that a hardcore Black Series variant will join the lineup.

A tuned version of the tuned version, AMG Black Series cars are specially designed by AMG Performance Studio to provide more power with less weight than their 'standard' AMG stablemates.

Production of these special versions has so far been limited, the AMG GT Black Series marking the sixth model so far to receive the treatment (behind the SLK 55, W203 and W204 C63 coupes, SL65 and SLS Black Series models).

As well as more oomph, Black Series cars have traditionally sported wider (and wilder - particularly in the case of the SL65 Black Series) bodywork and more aggressive aerodynamic components.

The announcement to media at the 2015 Detroit motor show supports footage captured at the Nurburgring showing a camouflaged AMG GT undergoing further development.

No technical details have been confirmed, but expect power to be well over the 400kW mark - up from the 375kW on the current range-topping AMG GT-S - while torque could rise above 700Nm (as is the case in the C63 S).

Mercedes have already stated that the new Porsche 911 fighter will comprise a full range of models, including a convertible, so the hard-edged 'Black' is a natural fit for the sports coupe line-up.

The 'base' Mercedes-AMG GT should arrive in Australia in the middle of 2015 priced from about $240,000.
