Facelifted Mercedes-Benz A45 AMG to reclaim power crown from Audi RS3 – report

The facelifted version of the Mercedes-Benz A45 AMG will receive a power boost so that it can once again claim bragging rights as the most powerful premium hatchback going around.

Tobias Moers, AMG's chief executive, spoke to Autocar and said that when the revised A-Class class debuts around the third quarter of this year, the updated A45 AMG "will be the most powerful again".

According to the British publication, the facelifted A45 AMG will be powered by a revised version of the current 2.0-litre turbocharged engine sporting 280kW of power. That would push the A45's specific output to 140kW per litre.

Should this prove to be the case, the new A45 AMG would have a 10kW advantage over the Audi RS3 and its 270kW/465Nm 2.5-litre turbocharged five-cylinder engine. Currently the A45 AMG sports a 265kW/450Nm engine, which it shares with the CLA45 AMG and GLA45 AMG.

The extra 15kW over the current car is expected to bring the A45's 0-100km/h time down by 0.1 of a second to 4.5 seconds. Top speed is likely to still be limited to 250km/h.

The magazine's sources also indicate that the revised A45 AMG will be more clearly differentiated from lesser A-Classes. With some diligent choices from the official parts menu, owners of the current non-A45 A-Class models can make their vehicles look almost indistinguishable from the A45 AMG.

For the updated A45 AMG, the car will be specified with more items that won't be made available directly to buyers of other A-Class variants.
