Suzuki Kizashi, Grand Vitara production to continue despite reports of models’ demise

Suzuki Australia says production of its Kizashi medium car and Grand Vitara SUV has not stopped despite international reports claiming both models have been discontinued.

The reports appear to have stemmed from a story published last week by UK-based website Just-Auto, which claims a Suzuki spokesperson confirmed the end of production of both cars.

But Suzuki Australia general manager automobiles Andrew Moore told CarAdvice he believes the reports are incorrect, revealing the local division has Grand Vitaras ordered for the next four months of production.

“I’ve got our Japanese guys contacting the factory to try to get some definitive information on where that story might have emanated from, but I can absolutely confirm that we’ve got Grand Vitaras ordered for the next few months,” Moore said.

Moore said Australian demand for the Grand Vitara is strong and the company is keen to get its hands on more stock.

“I know for an absolute fact that we want to get more Grand Vitaras and Jimnys, which is from the same plant, and there’s definitely production but our production is capped. We had some conversations with the factory just late last week confirming orders.”

“We haven’t placed orders for Kizashi because we’ve got enough stock, but I’ve had no correspondence suggesting that they’ve stopped production.

“To me it’s not an issue. We’re ordering cars. I’ve seen plans that show those cars being available for more than a year or two. When they talk about future plans for both those cars, they haven’t put any end dates on anything.”

Last week, Suzuki Australia detailed its strategy to boost its sales to 30,000 per year by 2017, announcing plans to launch up to six new models including the Celerio micro car and Vitara compact SUV next year, and a new small car to rival the Toyota Corolla in 2016.

Question marks still hang over the future of the Grand Vitara, which has been on sale for almost a decade in its current form. It’s understood that if Suzuki signs off on a new-generation Grand Vitara it won’t see the light of day until 2017 at the earliest.

There’s also no word on a successor to the Kizashi, which entered production towards the end of 2009.
