Alfa Romeo’s RWD sports sedan to debut in June – reports

Sources who spoke to Autocar claim that Alfa's new RWD sedan will make its global debut in June at Expo 2015, which is being held in Milan between the beginning of May and the end of October.

According to Automotive News Europe, Alfa Romeo's boss, Harald Wester, confirmed at the recent Los Angeles auto show that the company will launch a new vehicle in June of next year. Although he didn't specify what model it would be, unidentified persons within the company have told the industry newspaper that it will be Alfa's long awaited RWD sedan.

The two publications disagree about what the vehicle's specifics, though. The British magazine's sources claim that the new vehicle will be BMW 3 Series-sized and will wear the long rumoured Giulia badge.

On the other hand, Automotive News Europe's informants assert that the new car will have dimensions that are half way between the current BMW 3 and 5 Series sedans, and that the Giulia name is no longer a certainty.

Either way, the new Alfa RWD sedan will be the first salvo in the company's eight vehicle assault on the prestige car market. The plan, which was unusually announced to the world earlier this year, will see much of Alfa's future lineup based on a new rear- and all-wheel drive architecture.

If all goes to plan, the company will also debut a larger rear-wheel drive sedan and an SUV in order to reach an ambitious sales target of 400,000 sales per annum by the end of 2018.

The last mainstream rear-wheel drive vehicle produced by Alfa was the 75 sedan, which went out of production in 1992. Since then the company has produced a number of limited edition RWD sports cars, such as the 4C and 8C.
