Lexus LF-C2 concept emerges, previews RC convertible

The topless Lexus LF-C2 concept made its public premiere in the suitable surrounds of Los Angeles today after a drawn-out teaser campaign, previewing a road-going 2+2 roadster version of the dashing RC coupe

Fitting Lexus’ brief to add some stylistic edge to its range, the LF-C2 “Grand Tourer” is proof positive that Lexus wants to return to the fold against the BMW 4 Series convertible sooner rather than later.

In fact, take away outlandish additions such as the show-special 20-inch alloy wheels and the slimline side mirrors, and you basically have the styling for what will surely become the RC convertible. That car would replace the old IS convertible.

The multi-layer yellow concept rocks an exaggerated version of the road going RC’s familiar spindle grille, replete with new mesh that twists and turns as you walk laps of the car. There is also a new rear diffuser and prominent bulges on the boot that bleed from the rear seats.

At 4715mm long, 1840mm wide and 1385mm tall, the LF-C2 is dimensionally similar to the RC.

The cabin gives a good indication at where Lexus will take the design of its interiors in the years ahead. The rear deck runs down into the cabin in the form of a central strip dividing the rear seats that in turn becomes the centre console and location of the multimedia touchpad.

There is a sparse instrument cluster with a central video monitor controlled by said touchpad (an update on Lexus’ current toggle system) and a classically-styled analogue clock placed between the central air vents.

The thick leather-wrapped steering wheel and form-fitting seats lend some aggression. White-and-grey leather surfaces are soft to the touch while LED lights run along the length of the interior below the windows.

The steering wheel forgoes some button in favour of what appear to be nifty glowing blue touchpads, while the instruments are an evolution of the brand staple that premiered on the defunct LFA supercar.

The LF-C2 concept is the latest in a long line of LF-badged Lexus show cars, also including the LC-CC, LF-Gh and LF-NX. Each of those cars previewed a similar road-going version, respectively the RC, GS and NX.

As we know, the RC coupe will launch in Australia later this month.
