Volkswagen Golf R wagon: 221kW/380Nm load carrier to debut in LA

The high-performance Volkswagen Golf R wagon will have its global unveiling at this week's Los Angeles auto show.

Debuting eight months after our spy photographers spotted the car undergoing testing in Germany, the new wagon features the familiar Golf R mechanical package wrapped up in a more practical, load-lugging body.

The car that will be displayed in the City of Angels is powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine cranking out 221kW of power and 380Nm of torque.

Unlike the hatch variant, the wagon will only be available with an automated six-speed dual-clutch transmission (DSG).

Equipped with all-wheel drive as standard, the R wagon has a claimed 0-100km/h time of 5.1 seconds and a top speed that's electronically crimped to 250km/h.

Standard features include 20mm lower suspension, progressive steering, body kit, rear diffuser, reworked front and rear bumpers, and switchable stability control. On the options list are an adaptive chassis control system and driving profile selector.

As with the regular Golf wagon, the R wagon can swallow 605 litres worth of amorphous stuff with the rear seats up and 1620L worth of goods when the rear pews are folded down.

Volkswagen Australia communications general manager Karl Gehling told CarAdvice the local division believes the Golf R wagon "would be a great model for our market" and has expressed its interest in bringing it to Australia. He said it is still too early to know when it could reach our shores if it does get the green light, however.

If the hot wagon does make the long trip to the antipodes, expect it to feature the same detuned 206kW/380Nm engine as the R hatchback that's sold here.
