Toyota Tundra TRD Pro a “strong possibility” for Australia in 2015

The performance-focused Toyota Tundra TRD Pro could soon be sold in Australia, but it won't be available from your local Toyota dealership.

The Toyota Tundra TRD (Toyota Racing Development) Pro could be part of the line-up for Queensland importer and conversion specialists Performax International in 2015, CarAdvice has been told, with the bold new model set to sit at the top of the Tundra tree above the current Platinum and 1794 models.

Those versions are priced at $120,190 plus on-road costs - more than double the cost of the range-topping HiLux SR5.

The Tundra TRD Pro features TRD-tuned suspension with Bilstein front and rear shocks, a quarter-inch aluminium skid plate under the body of the ute, and its 5.7-litre V8 petrol engine - which pumps out 284kW of power and 544Nm of torque via a six-speed automatic gearbox - now gets a more aggressive soundtrack courtesy of a new dual exhaust system.

The front of the Tundra has been lifted by five centimetres, with the suspension said to offer improved ride quality over harsh terrain.

The TRD Pro version rides on black 18-inch TRD alloy wheels covered in Michelin off-road tyres developed solely for the Tundra.

Further styling changes include TRD Pro pressing in the walls of the tray, black badges, a unique grille with Toyota badge, and interior changes such as TRD Pro trim and red stitching highlights. Performax International sales manager, Kevin Thoroughgood, suggested the company has high hopes of securing the TRD model for local sale.

"We are currently investigating the possibility of importing the TRD Pro next year, and it looks likely that will happen," Thoroughgood said.

Toyota Australia has previously sold a TRD version of the HiLux ute - that model had a 4.0-litre supercharged V6 engine, and was discontinued in 2009 after going on sale in 2008.
