Toyota FCV to be zero car at final Japanese Rally Championship race

The Toyota FCV hydrogen fuel cell hybrid will act as the zero car at the final race in this year's Japanese Rally Championship.

As a zero car, the Toyota FCV will race out on the course of the 285km Shinshiro Rally, held at the beginning of November, prior to other competitors, warning bystanders about the upcoming rally cars and spotting any potential hazards on the track.

Toyota claims the FCV that will do duty at the Shinshiro Rally has been been "specially tuned and outfitted for rally racing", although the company has yet to elaborate on what mechanical changes it has made.

Aside from the paint scheme, which does a commendable job of making the FCV more aesthetically pleasing, the FCV zero car rides on different alloy wheels clad with Dunlop Sport Maxx tyres.

There also seems to be some form of roll cage fitted to the FCV, while the driver and front passenger seats have been replaced by racing-style buckets.

The FCV will go into production in 2015, with sales beginning in April in Japan, and during the northern summer across Europe and the US.

In Japan, the FCV will wear a sticker price of around 7 million yen ($73,000). The FCV's only external power source is pressurised hydrogen, which is passed through the car's fuel cell stacks to create electricity for the electric motor, with the only tailpipe emissions being water.

According to the Toyota, the FCV's electric motor will be able to produce over 100kW of power. A fully fuelled FCV is claimed to have a range of around 700km under Japan's JC08 testing standard; US-bound models have an estimated range of about 480km.
