The headline is correct, the previously limited edition Volvo S60 Polestar performance sedan has been joined by a wagon sibling, the Volvo V60 Polestar.
Following on from the popularity of the previous two limited edition models, Volvo has announced there will be no cap on the amount of Polestar cars that come into Australia.
Sedan pricing remains the same as the most recent version that was reduced by a not insignificant $10,000. That means the 2015 Volvo S60 Polestar costs $99,990, while the 2015 Volvo V60 Polestar costs $3000 more at $102,990.
According to Polestar representatives currently in Australia for the launch of the updated line-up, the success of the limited edition pilot run here paved the way for a global Polestar engineering program.
The most significant changes to both Polestar vehicles for 2015 are under the skin. Most importantly, there is increased grip thanks to the standard Michelin Pilot Super Sport tyres. The Polestar’s rims have been increased to 20 inches, with the sticky tyres measuring 245/35ZR20.
Polestar has tweaked the bespoke Ohlins Polestar shock absorbers (still manually adjustable) and the tune of the Haldex all-wheel-drive system has also been adjusted. The drivetrain wasn’t the only part of the car to get some subtle reworking though. There’s new engine management calibration and transmission programming. Polestar tech gurus reckon this offers greater driver control over gear selection and faster gearshifts, but there’s also launch control and curve hold functionality, which prevent the transmission from dropping down a gear mid-corner and unsettling the car.
A new brake booster and master cylinder have been fitted, and the ABS has been recalibrated along with the stability control system, also in an attempt to refine driver control. The MY15 Polestar sedan and wagon get the same six-piston Brembo brakes and same size rotors as the model they replace.
The inline six-cylinder turbocharged engine develops 257kW at 5250rpm and 500Nm at 3000rpm. Polestar has added a new, full-flow 2.5-inch stainless steel active exhaust system with 3.5-inch outlets that both reduce back pressure and deliver a meatier note more in keeping with the Polestar’s sporting nature.
The S60 Polestar gets from 0-100km/h in 4.9 seconds, while the V60 Polestar completes the sprint in 5.0 seconds.
Outside, there’s a new rear spoiler for the sedan – now bigger and more noticeable than the lip spoiler fitted to the old model – and a larger spoiler (compared with the R Design) fitted to the wagon as well. Both spoilers have been extensively tested in a wind tunnel in the pursuit of increased high-speed stability.
The seats and steering wheel are luxuriously trimmed in a combination of Nubuck and perforated leather to be both comfortable day-to-day and useful when driving gets a little more spirited. There’s also Polestar blue highlights and bespoke sports pedals and foot rest to differentiate the Polestar interior from the R Design models.
Volvo’s Swedish V8 Supercars driver Robert Dahlgren has been deeply involved with the Polestar development program from the outset, with young gun Scott McLaughlin also signing off on final development.
There’s only one specification for both sedan and wagon. The Polestar models are well equipped and come with every option you can get on the top spec R Design S60 or V60. An R Design sedan with the same equipment will set buyers back $86,065.
Highlights of the specification list include active cruise control, active headlights, Sensus Connect infotainment system, access to Pandora and other apps and satellite navigation that has a ‘send to car’ function, allowing drivers to send an address to their car from their desktop so that the address is already in the system when they get into the car. Queue assist is also standard, and means you can follow the car in front in traffic, with the system taking care of braking and accelerating. There’s also a mobile hot spot.
The sedan and wagon siblings will go on sale in Australia in January 2015, with seven other markets around the world also gaining access to both variants.
