Porsche planning luxury EV to rival Tesla Model S – report

Early development work has begun on an electric Porsche to rival the Tesla Model S, according to reports out of Europe.

German media is reporting that Porsche chairman Matthias Muller made comments suggesting that its first-ever pure-electric production model will form part of an upcoming five-door mid-sized family.

The long-rumoured ‘Pajun’ (Panamera junior) model is set to take on the likes of the BMW 5 Series and Mercedes-Benz E-Class with a range of conventional combustion engines, though the rumoured EV version is supposedly being developed to directly tackle the Model S.

UK publication Autocar claims the mid-sized model will be based on a second-generation version of the MSB platform that’s currently used by the Panamera.

The body and underpinnings will comprise a higher percentage of lightweight aluminium and high-strength steel, with Porsche certain to target a kerb weight below the 2190 kilograms of the Tesla.

Powertrain details remain top secret at this stage, though the luxury sports car manufacturer will no doubt aim to outperform the flagship Model S P85, which produces 310kW and 600Nm from its electric motor, and has a range of 502 kilometres on a single charge.

The electric Porsche program will be fast-tracked by drawing on expertise gained from the development the Boxster E concept, while it may also turn to Volkswagen Group partners VW and Audi for extra know-how.
