The front and rear of the luxury German model gains evolutionary design changes, bringing the A6 more in line with the modernised company look while increasing its length by about 17mm. Globally the A6 is offered with five diesel and three petrol engines, with power ranging from 110kW to 245kW.
New active safety technologies include active lane and side assist as well as night vision assistant, all of which will be available in Australia.
Audi Australia will drop all A6 Avant (wagon) models due to lacklustre sales, focusing instead on a simplified A6 sedan range, which in its current iteration is 44 per cent up in sales year on year.
The 2015 Audi A6 range will see the discontinuation of all CVT multitronic models, including the 2.0-litre TFSI (132kW), which will be replaced with a new 1.8-litre TFSI (140kW) with a new seven-speed S tronic transmission driving power through the front wheels.
Three diesel models will also be part of the revamped line-up, including a 2.0-litre TDI (which will come later in 2015), a new entry-level 3.0-litre TDI quattro with a single turbo (160kW) coupled to seven-speed S tronic and the high-specification 235kW 3.0-litre TDI biturbo which is equipped with a regular eight-speed automatic transmission.
Pricing and specifications are yet to be confirmed, however it’s expected that Audi Australia will keep similar pricing across the A6 (starting around $80,000) and S6 (previously $168,900) range while adding additional equipment.
In the case of the new entry-model A6 160kW quattro, it will mean a lower entry price for the diesel A6 quattro range, which currently kicks off from $108,400 for the slightly more powerful 180kW model. The company is also considering the 2.0-litre TFSI quattro to launch at a later date.
Audi Australia senior product communications executive Shaun Cleary told CarAdvice at the international launch of the updated A6 in Dresden, Germany, that despite fewer variants in the new A6 range, the new model should see a sales increase in 2015.
"In terms of the new model we seek to enhance value for the customers, [we] do it through increased specification as we've done before, it's not a new strategy for us, it's something we've been doing successfully for a number of years. As a brand we want to grow, we don't want to stay in the number three position forever [behind Mercedes-Benz and BMW]," Cleary said.
The best selling A6 in Australia is currently the 2.0-litre TDI, while two thirds of all A6s sold are quattro.
In addition to the A6 range the updated sporty Audi S6 will become a regular model when it launches at the same time, improving its performance with a new acceleration time from 0-100km/h in 4.4 seconds (4.6 seconds previously) thanks to a power bump from 309kW to 331kW while fuel economy is improved to 9.2L/100km.
The update will also apply to the popular Audi A6 Allroad quattro, which will drop the 180kW 3.0-litre diesel in favour of the 160kW quattro S tronic version. It will be joined by the high-performance RS6 Avant (launching later in the year) to cater to wagon buyers.
