Car sales September 2014 :: winners and losers

The Australian new vehicle market has posted its first positive result of the year, with September sales up 2.5 per cent compared with the same month in 2013.

Sales were up in all states expect Tasmania (-5.5 per cent) and Western Australia (-2.7 per cent) last month, with the Northern Territory (+6.1 per cent) and New South Wales (+5.9 per cent) leading the charge.

The 94,978 September total takes the 2014 tally to 832,953 with three months of the year remaining – down 2.0 per cent or 16,991 compared with the same time in 2013.

Australia’s love affair with SUVs continues, with sales up 14.6 per cent last month. Sales of small (+31.1 per cent) and medium SUVs (+15.4 per cent) were particularly strong.

SUVs now account for 31.4 per cent of the market, or almost one in every three new vehicles sold in the country.

Emphasising this was the performance of Jeep, which climbed into the top 10 manufacturers list for the first time in its history with a record 2937 sales, up 43.4 per cent compared with September 2013.

Premium SUV brand Land Rover was also up 44.1 per cent last month to 889 units, while two SUVs, the Mazda CX-5 and Hyundai ix35, claimed top-10 spots on the September tally.

Sales of light-commercial vehicles also reversed their downward trend, climbing 2.9 per cent last month. The Toyota HiLux, Ford Ranger and Mitsubishi Triton finished third, sixth and ninth last month respectively.

The battle for the title of Australia’s favourite car could barely be closer. The Mazda 3 ended the Toyota Corolla’s six-month stranglehold on top of the monthly charts with a 4014 to 3893 win in September. The result helped it narrow the Corolla’s lead to just 23 sales heading into the final three months of the year (33,106 versus 33,083).

Holden Commodore sales slipped 8.8 per cent year-on-year last month to 2616, though it still managed to edge the Hyundai i30, which likewise fell 5.1 per cent to 2539. The Commodore remains a big success story for Holden in 2014, however, with sales up 26.5 per cent to the end of September.

September’s top three brands all posted year-on-year sales increases, with Toyota (17,880, up 2.2 per cent) leading the way from Mazda (9500, up 24.8 per cent – buoyed by the brand’s popular M-Day promotion) and Hyundai (8804, up a single vehicle).

Holden could manage only fourth, slipping 11.1 per cent to 8551, while Ford tumbled 17.0 per cent to 6227.

Mitsubishi (6066), Nissan (5484) and Volkswagen (4467) were all relatively stable last month, while Subaru enjoyed a 16.4 per cent spike to 3204 sales.

A 24.9 per cent increase for Honda (2723) couldn’t stop the Japanese brand slipping behind Jeep and a rampant Mercedes-Benz (2800, up 12.2 per cent) into 12th position overall, while Kia’s disappointing year worsened with an 18.1 per cent decline to 2074 sales.

Suzuki was another notable loser in September, down 21.0 per cent to 1485.

Among the winners list were Audi (1629, up 30.6 per cent), Citroen (120, up 46.3 per cent), Isuzu (1335, up 68.8 per cent), Jaguar (122, up 54.4 per cent), Mini (258, up 8.9 per cent), Porsche (221, up 24.1 per cent), Renault (851, up 30.7 per cent) and Skoda (330, up 17.4 per cent).

Top sellers by segment were: Mitsubishi Mirage (micro) with 302, Hyundai i20 (light) with 1497, Audi A3 (premium small) with 445, Toyota Camry (medium) with 2173, Mercedes-Benz C-Class (premium medium) with 509, Honda Odyssey (people-mover) with 187, Toyota 86 (sports) with 328, Audi Q3 (premium small SUV) with 166, Audi Q5 (premium medium SUV) with 270, Toyota Prado (large SUV) with 1439, and the BMW X5 (premium large SUV) with 352.
