Range Rover confirms fourth model line

The Range Rover line-up will expand to include a fourth distinct model, the company’s design chief has confirmed.

Speaking with Australian journalists at the Paris motor show today, Range Rover design director Gerry McGovern confirmed the new model would be a “unique proposition” and not a spin-off of the existing Range Rover, Sport and Evoque model lines.

“It will be a distinct model, differentiated, not a derivative,” McGovern said.

“It will be a white-space opportunity. What you’ll see eventually is something that is highly desirable and it’s not what you’d expect.”

The British design guru declined to give any hints as to what size or form the new model would take, though ruled out a dedicated seven-seater to sit above the 5+2 Range Rover Sport.

“Range Rovers are about exclusiveness, [Land Rover] Discoverys are about inclusiveness. I would say it’s the job of the Discovery family to offer seven seats. If we’re not careful we become the seven-seat company. I think Range Rovers need to talk more to exclusiveness.”

McGovern also denied Range Rover would head down the path of offering a coupe-inspired SUV similar to the BMW X4 and X6 and the upcoming Mercedes-Benz ML Coupe.

“I don’t take any notice of what they do,” he said of the company’s German rivals.

Range Rover currently offers three- and five-door versions of the compact Evoque, a single body style of the larger Sport, and standard- and long-wheelbase derivatives of the full-size Range Rover.
