2015 Subaru Impreza update revealed in US

An upgraded version of the US-market Subaru Impreza small car has surfaced, bringing with it subtle styling tweaks, extra sound-deadening, additional equipment and the availability of EyeSight preventative safety technologies.

The mid-life update comes as Subaru of America — the core region for the Japanese brand — guns for its seventh consecutive year of record sales.

As part of the update, Subaru has tweaked the styling to bring it into line with the new 2015 Legacy/Liberty, fitting subtly revised headlights, grille and bumpers.

Dynamically, there are measures to reduce noise intrusion, through thicker window glass and more sound-deadening. The electric-assisted steering rack also gets a faster ratio.

Inside, even the base 2.0i version now gets a 6.2-inch touchscreen infotainment system and reversing camera, while models higher up the food chain get access to extras including Subaru’s EyeSight suite, which includes adaptive cruise control, pre-collision braking and lane departure warning.

The Impreza’s mechanicals are unchanged for 2015, meaning the 110kW/196Nm 2.0 litre FB20 four-cylinder boxer engine remains, with power sent to all four wheels via Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive.

In Australia, fuel consumption for the six-speed manual comes in at 7.1 l/100km, while the CVT auto models use 6.8 l/100km.

The revised small sedan and hatch model for the 2015 model year will progressively roll out across other global markets including Australia.

However, the car’s launch in local showrooms appears some way off yet, according to Subaru Australia national corporate affairs manager David Rowley, who told CarAdvice today that local specs were not yet finalised and wouldn’t be for some time yet.

Expect to see the revised model launch during 2015 though. Considering our Impreza comes out of the same plant as the US model — at least until Subaru starts making the Impreza for the US in Indiana from 2016 — expect most of these changes to carry over locally.

The Impreza is performing well in Australia this year. Subaru sales as a whole are down 2.4 per cent, but the Impreza is up 19.0 pr cent in regular guise, while the new WRX is up 68.0 per cent, with the new version — especially the CVT — moving out of showrooms at a clip.
