Ferrari 458 Speciale A limited edition convertible unveiled

The limited edition Ferrari 458 Speciale A was unveiled overnight ahead of its public debut at the Paris motor show.

The A in the name stands for aperta or open in Italian. As such, it shares the retractable aluminium hardtop with the regular 458 Spider. The Speciale A can go from open to closed, or vice versa, in 14 seconds.

The rest of the car, though, shares more in common with the 458 Speciale coupe that was unveiled at last year's Frankfurt show and which went on sale earlier in Australia this year.

Like the Speciale coupe, the Speciale A is powered by the company's most powerful naturally aspirated road-legal V8. The 4.5-litre eight-cylinder engine churns out 445kW of power and 540Nm of torque for the rear wheels and standard seven-speed dual-clutch transmission to digest.

With a dry weight of 1340kg, the Speciale A weighs just 50kg more than the coupe. Ferrari says that it can race from 0-100km/h in 3.0 seconds and onwards to 200km/h in 9.5 seconds.

Its 0-100km/h time and 1 minute 23.5 seconds lap time around the company's Fiorano circuit is the same as the Speciale coupe. The convertible is 0.4s slower to the 200km/h mark, though.

As with the coupe, the Speciale A is rated to drink 11.9L/100km under the EU testing regime.

Most of the exterior changes made to the Speciale coupe, such as the louvres vents next the headlights, the aggressive front bumper and air intakes, winged side sills, five-spoke forged alloy wheels and rear diffuser, have been carried over to convertible.

Inside, the convertible has door panels, dashboard highlights and a central tunnel made from blue carbon fibre.

The production run of the 458 Speciale A will be limited to just 499 units worldwide — the same number, incidentally, as the LaFerrari.
