The 2015 Infiniti Q50 luxury sedan has a new starting price point thanks to the addition of a turbocharged petrol engine.

Bringing the entry price of the Infiniti Q50 down to $50,900 plus on-road costs is a new variant that sits below the diesel (from $51,900) and hybrid (from $67,900) models in the Japanese luxury sedan range.

The new Infiniti Q50 2.0T is powered by a Mercedes-derived 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged engine that produces 155kW of power and 350Nm of torque. Infiniti says buyers benefit because there are no detuned entry petrol versions – the Audi A4 1.8 TFSI base model (priced at $55,500), for example, has 125kW/320Nm; the BMW 316i (from $52,800) has just 100kW/220Nm; and the new Mercedes-Benz C200 (from $60,900) has 135kW/300Nm.

However, compared to its aforementioned rivals, the Q50’s fuel use is on the high side, rated at 7.3 litres per 100 kilometres. Of the A4, 3 Series and C-Class, none uses more than 7.0L/100km with a four-cylinder engine. At least on the official cycle.

That fuel use also means the Q50 doesn’t slip below the luxury car tax environmental threshold (7.0L/100km), making on-road costs notably higher than some rivals.

That $50,900 price is for the Q50 2.0T GT which, until 31 December, has a promotional driveaway price for $55,900. Included as part of the deal for the base model is complimentary servicing for four years or 80,000 kilometres, whichever comes first.

GT models come standard with plenty of kit, including 17-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights with integrated daytime running lights, twin touchscreen displays, satellite navigation with traffic messaging, a reverse-view camera, Bluetooth phone and audio streaming, digital radio (DAB+), climate control, tyre pressure monitoring, leather trimmed seats, electric front seat adjustment, smart key entry and start, and memory settings for the driver’s seat.

“In the entry level grade, the Q50 comes fairly fully equipped, unlike some of the other product offerings in the segment,” said Infiniti Australia general manager Campbell York. “The Infiniti Q50 comes with a price advantage of between 17 or 18 per cent depending on the competitor.”

There’s also an Enhancement pack for Q50 GT variants (petrol and diesel), which costs $3000 and includes an electric sunroof with blind, and 18-inch seven-spoke alloy wheels.

Other trim levels available for the 2.0T include the S – priced at $56,900 or $63,147 driveaway – which includes standard goodies such as 18-inch alloy wheels, Infiniti’s Direct-Adaptive Steering (by-wire) with Active Lane Control, paddle-shifters, a Bose 14-speaker stereo system, electric sunroof and a sportier front bumper. Hybrid S models have 19-inch alloys and sports suspension.

The flagship 2.0T is the S Premium, at $60,500 or $67,347 driveaway. It takes the equipment levels even further, with 19-inch light alloy wheels, radar cruise control and distance warning system, forward collision avoidance and emergency braking, lane departure warning and a camera-based lane drift prevention system, blind-spot warning and intervention, rear cross-traffic alert, a surround-view camera system with sensors, and active high beam lighting.

The Infiniti Q50 2.0T goes on sale from October 1, 2014.
