2016 Renault Koleos spied for the first time

These are the first images of the new-generation 2016 Renault Koleos, which was caught by our spy photographers undergoing hot-weather testing in Europe.

The all-new Koleos is set to be based upon the same underpinnings as the recently released Nissan Qashqai, as part of the longstanding Renault-Nissan Alliance and its buddy-up toolkit known as the Common Module Family. The new Koleos was seen testing alongside a Qashqai, and the resemblance is unmistakable.

The new model will likely share similar dimensions to the Nissan SUV (4377 millimetres long, 1806mm wide, 1595mm tall) and ride on an identical wheelbase (2646mm). It could even share the same engines as are seen in the Qashqai, including a 1.6-litre turbo diesel and a 2.0-litre petrol four-cylinder. We'd expect, though, that a 1.2-litre turbo four-cylinder may instead be the petrol engine of choice.

As is clear from these images, the new model will boast Renault's updated styling language, with the new SUV to feature a strong front-end design mimicking that seen on the smaller Captur crossover model. The above picture highlights the Koleos' LED daytime running lights, while its bonnet has more pronounced character lines over the headlights than the Nissan.

The new Koleos looks far less awkward in profile, too, with a squarer roofline and standard SUV proportions including a raised ride height and sculpted body panels which you can see hints of through the car's camouflage.

The rear of the new-generation Koleos offers some similarities with the Clio city car, including the shape of its tail-light clusters that can be made out through the sticky disguise.

As CarAdvice has previously reported, the next-generation Koleos is set to be crucial model for the brand, and having been around since 2008 it is ageing fast in one of the most competitive sections of the market.

Renault Australia corporate communications and sponsorship manager, Emily Fadeyev, confirmed to CarAdvice that the new Koleos will be sold here, likely from about 2016.

"Koleos is a very important car for us," Fadeyev said.

We'd expect the new Koleos could debut either late in 2015 (possibly at the Frankfurt motor show in September/October) or early in 2016 (at the Geneva motor show in March).
