Peugeot RCZ unlikely to see a second generation

The Peugeot RCZ sports car is not expected to be renewed for a second generation, reports out of Europe suggest.

According to AutoExpress, the Peugeot RCZ is not expected to be replaced when the current version finishes up its model life, as PSA Peugeot Citroen boss Carlos Tavares hinted that derivative hot models will be more important than standalone performance vehicles in the future.

“Our brands need sports cars, but they’ll be more sporty derivatives than bespoke models,” Tavares is quoted as saying.

“RCZ has a little while to run yet,” he said of the 308-based 2+2 coupe, which debuted in 2009 and was facelifted in 2013. The current model is likely to be built until 2015 or 2016.

The RCZ has always been a niche player in the Australian market, and since its market launch in 2010 the car has managed only 582 sales. So far in 2014 the RCZ has seen 72 units sold, down 42.9 per cent on 2013.

The RCZ is priced from $58,990 for the 1.6-litre turbo petrol and 2.0-litre turbo diesel, while the range-topping RCZ R costs $68,990.
