2015 Fiat 500X teased ahead of Paris motor show debut

The new high-riding 2015 Fiat 500X baby SUV has been teased ahead of its global reveal at the 2014 Paris motor show next month.

A video released by Fiat Poland shows highlights of the new 500X’s design, including silhouettes of the baby SUV’s front, side and rear, offering an idea of how the new model – which shares its platform with the Jeep Renegade revealed earlier this year – will look.

The new Fiat is set to look drastically different to the smallest Jeep, though, with a rounded, curvaceous body, but still with some off-road-inspired body cladding to lend it some rough-and-tumble nous. Don’t expect squared-off wheel arches like those seen on the Jeep, either.

Its front appears to mimic that of the 500L, with twin light elements either side of a broad grille, and a bold lower bumper with integrated bash-plate section.

The rear looks more like a Mini Countryman, with large tail-lights, a broad tailgate and pronounced rear bumper.

While no official images of the car’s interior have yet been seen, CarAdvice’s spies caught a glimpse of a prototype model’s cockpit earlier this year. The 500X will offer a link to the smaller, popular 500 city car, with a body-coloured dash strip, though it won’t share many interior parts with the Renegade.

Full details of the 500X aren’t yet confirmed, but engines for the small high-riding hatchback are expected to include a range of small output petrol and diesel units, including the quirky two-cylinder TwinAir turbo 0.9-litre petrol unit. Front- and all-wheel-drive versions are expected. For reference, the Jeep version is offered with a 2.4-litre four-cylinder petrol, a 1.4-litre petrol borrowed from Fiat, and a 1.6-litre four-cylinder.

Earlier reports suggested the 500X would be the largest member of the expanded 500 range, measuring about 4.2 metres in length. That would make it about six centimetres longer than the 500L, but shorter than the 500L Living seven-seat model sold in Europe (4.35m).

Sales of the 500X are expected to begin in Europe and North America during the first half of 2015, and in Australia from late 2015 or potentially 2016.
