The Jeep Cherokee SUV range has introduced a sole diesel model, the all-wheel-drive Limited, which is priced at $49,000 plus on-road costs.
That price puts the Cherokee Limited diesel as the most expensive model in the range, above the previous flagship $47,500 Trailhawk V6 petrol and a full $5000 over the equivalent Limited with the 3.2-litre six-cylinder petrol powerplant.
That price positions the Cherokee well above diesel-powered rivals, such as the Honda CR-V (from $38,290), Ford Kuga (from $39,240) and Mazda CX-5 (from $39,470). However, Jeep is offering a long list of standard gear that mirrors what is also seen in the Limited petrol model, as well as options such as forward collision warning, semi-automated parking system for parallel and perpendicular parking, adaptive cruise control, lane departure and blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert.
See the standard specs breakdown below for more information.
The diesel Limited comes powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder producing 125kW of power and 350Nm of torque, with stop-start functionality aiding its fuel consumption, which is rated at 5.8 litres per 100 kilometres. There is no manual option; instead, all diesel Cherokees have a nine-speed automatic gearbox, as is the case with the petrol versions, and power is sent to all four wheels.
Buyers hoping for a cheaper diesel model in the Cherokee range, or a hardcore Trailhawk diesel variant, will be disappointed to learn that Jeep Australia has “no immediate plans to increase the diesel offering beyond the Limited”.
