Nissan Pathfinder Hybrid : Pricing and specifications

The supercharged, petrol-electric Nissan Pathfinder Hybrid will be priced from $42,990 when it launches here later this month.

Official pricing and details have not been made available by the company, but leaked documents suggest the Pathfinder Hybrid will be offered in three trim levels, much like the standard model range. The entry-level ST two-wheel drive will kick off the Hybrid range at $42,990, but there's no 4WD ST model available with the Hybrid drivetrain. That makes for a big step up to the all-wheel drive ST-L ($57,490), while the range-topping Ti is priced at a hefty $68,090.

Nissan's Pathfinder Hybrid is powered by a 2.5-litre supercharged four-cylinder engine that is teamed to a 15kW electric motor. Peak power is rated at 188kW (2kW less than the petrol V6) and peak torque is rated at 330Nm (5Nm more than the V6). Power is transferred to the wheels via a CVT automatic, with a clutch plate between the petrol engine and electric motor, and another inside the CVT.

As well as aiding power outputs, the electric motor acts as a generator to recharge the lithium-ion battery pack, which is located beneath the third row seats at the rear of the car. Both cabin space and luggage space are unaffected in the Pathfinder Hybrid compared with the regular model.

The biggest benefit of the hybrid system is its fuel use, which drops to a claimed 8.4 litres per 100 kilometres for the 2WD model, and 8.5L/100km for the AWD version - that's down from 9.9L and 10.2L respectively.

Buyers who plan to tow with their Pathfinder should take note, however, that the Hybrid model has a braked capacity of just 1650 kilograms, well down on the petrol-only versions which can lug up to 2700kg (braked).

Equipment levels will largely mirror those seen in the V6 variants. The entry-level ST 2WD model gets a decent amount of kit, including electric driver's seat adjustment, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and gearknob, 18-inch alloy wheels, tri-zone climate control with vents for all three rows, keyless entry and push-button start, a 7.0-inch colour media screen, reverse-view camera with rear parking sensors, a 2Gb music hard drive and USB/auxiliary inputs for the six-speaker stereo. Bluetooth phone connectivity is standard, but audio streaming isn't.

The ST-L adds fog lights, heated mirrors, front sunroof and rear panoramic glass roof, auto-dimming rear-view mirror, heated front seats with electric lumbar adjustment, power passenger seat, leather upholstery, and an electronically adjustable steering column.

An option pack for the ST-L (which costs $2100) adds Bluetooth audio streaming, a Bose audio system, satellite navigation, the useful Around View Monitor and an 8.0-inch colour infotainment display.

The Ti flagship model has the abovementioned items as standard, and also gains 20-inch alloys, a powered tailgate, ventilated front seats, memory settings for the steering column, driver’s seat, and door mirrors, a tri-zone entertainment system with screens in the front headrests, and a 13-speaker Bose audio system with 9Gb music hard drive.
