Opel teases mysterious new model for Moscow show

Opel has teased a mysterious new model two weeks out from its unveiling at the 2014 Moscow motor show.

The single teaser image of the car peering out from beneath a yellow cloth was uploaded to Opel Russia’s various social media pages overnight.

There were no clues as to whether it is a production model or a concept, with the car maker simply encouraging fans to take a guess at what it could be.

The secret model’s thin, piercing headlights and seemingly broad, upright grille are reminiscent of the sporty Opel Monza concept (below) that debuted at last year’s Frankfurt motor show.

The yellow cloth hugs the car’s lines, highlighting its low-slung, squat proportions, long bonnet, heavily raked windscreen, coupe-style roofline and muscular rear haunches.

The signs ostensibly point to a new compact sports model from General Motors’ German division.

The teaser image has fuelled speculation that Opel is preparing a new Calibra sports car. This year marks 25 years since the launch of the single-generation coupe, which was produced between 1989 and 1997 and introduced to Australia wearing Holden badges in 1991.

Despite Opel’s exit from the local market last year, its cars remain relevant to us, with Holden committed to filling out its line-up with models – particularly performance-oriented ones – produced by its German sister company.
