Toyota FT-1 Vision GT concept hints at next-generation Supra

A new-generation Toyota Supra appears to be a virtual step closer, with the Japanese brand furthering its sports car intentions with the racy new Toyota FT-1 Vision GT concept.

The new virtual racing car - which is soon to be available in Sony PlayStation 3's popular Gran Turismo 6 franchise - joins the FT-1 Concept that can already by virtually driven by gamers. The clear differences between the two is the racing intent, with the new concept boasting an extreme aero package, racing wheels and tyres, and lashings of carbonfibre.

Earlier this week it was revealed that Toyota's new-generation Supra sports car was expected to be hybrid-powered with all-wheel drive. Auto Express asserts the new Supra will share plenty with the next-generation BMW Z4, including the use of technologies signed into in July 2012 as part of a memorandum of understanding.

The new Supra and Z4 aren't expected until 2017, and they are expected to see the widespread se of lightweight materials like aluminium and carbonfibre used in BMW’s i3 and i8 plug-in models, along with turbocharged direct-injection four-cylinder engines. Power is set to be sent to all four wheels via a dual-clutch automatic transmission.

Toyota Australia product public relations manager Stephen Coughlan told CarAdvice that while the concept is merely a virtual idea of how such a car could look, the brand would "have our hands up quick if something like that were to become available".
